High on a hill in the Hawke's Bay region, our estate looks down over the vast valley of the Tuki Tuki River. With the advice of David McKee, a highly respected winemaker at Black Barn Vineyards, about 500 Sauvignon Blanc vines were planted on the north facing slope of the estate, thus creating Riverbend Vineyard.
The vines were planted close together in the traditional European style to create low yields with a high concentration of balanced flavor, fantastic to be enjoyed alfresco or paired with food.
Important to note: our vines are not only hand picked to create the most intimate, high quality vintage year after year, but they are also 100% pure, all with the exact same DNA, directly from the Bordeaux region of France where Sauvignon Blanc originated. Whereas most vines of this varietal from that region were initially blended because there were so many of them to experiment with--named after "sauvage," the French word for "wild," one can see why--Riverbend Vineyard takes pride in our discretion.
The likes of Sauvignon Blanc then traveled from France all the way to New Zealand, where the Marlborough region made Sauvignon Blanc known worldwide, and now Hawke's Bay, where Riverbend Vineyard resides, is the second largest wine region in all of New Zealand boasting over 5,000 hectares, or over 12,000 acres, of vineyard area.
The difficult soil, temperate climate, and lengthy growing season at Riverbend Vineyard has allowed us to produce three vintages of our Sauvignon Blanc since 2013.
This varietal doesn't benefit from excessive aging, so enjoying the vintage young is ideal!
Our Sauvignon Blanc has a smooth, yet bright and juicy acidity on the palate, herbaceous fruit characters with lifted aromas of bell pepper, citrus, and underlying tropical notes for the nose, and a dry, refreshing finish that is sure to leave a smile on your face.
